How does finals week work
Eating healthy food is always a great idea. During finals week, you may be tempted to eat and drink whatever items are most convenient. However, the quick calories of processed carbohydrates will ultimately leave you exhausted.
Instead, eat foods that are digested slowly: whole grains, fresh vegetables, and lean proteins. A little planning can go a long way as you head into finals week. A loaf of whole grain bread and turkey slices can make a stack of sandwiches. Bags of baby carrots or microwaveable frozen peas can provide a quick, healthy snack, as can a handful of almonds or walnuts.
Before a final, be sure to eat a meal that is high in protein. Most final exams are more than an hour in length, and a sugar rush simply will not see you through. Likewise, taking an important test while hungry can be a recipe for disaster. If you have more than one final, you might be planning to study for each individually, likely in chronological order. Interestingly, research has shown that human brains are not designed to focus narrowly for long stretches of time. I benefited from that extra night as I had an entire room to move out of.
So, this really depends on what you want to do, but if you are living in a dorm on campus, you will have to be all moved out by 12pm on the Friday of Finals Week.
However, the main message here is that you get to go on break after finals! It depends. Most likely, you will, but it depends on the course and the professor. Some finals may be final projects or essays, which could potentially be turned in or presented on the last day of classes.
Most labs will have some type of formal lab report or project which will be due near the end of the semester or finals week. There is no specific time slot during finals week for lab.
Block out time prior to the week beginning for self-care activities. For example, this past semester I had a final on Monday, a final on Tuesday, none on Wednesday, and two on Thursday. It was a great break from the endless studying we had been doing, as well as a recharge so we could continue studying when we got back to campus! I also definitely call my mom multiple times during finals week.
Sometimes I need to cry and just let out my stress and frustration, and other times I just want to call and catch up and talk about other things that are going on in my life at the time, or hear what my mom is up to. This, also, is a good break from studying and a great way to combat that stress.
This semester I have two and one is online so we get to use our notes and book. You will probably have a final something, but this might be a paper or project that is due before finals week. If I did not have a final for a class, I usually had a group project. In college, finals are during a whole week after classes are done.
Now I know this might be the same for some high schools, but at my high school we did not have a special week devoted to finals. We had them during our regular classes and then still had class right after. I know, kind of weird right? But in college, your finals are spread out over a week which means your winter break starts whenever your finals are done sorry to all those people with Friday finals.
This can be a good or bad thing for you. You may not want to wait and just take all your finals on Monday, but hey more study time. Your finals could be spread out over different days and times. We all have a studio class that accounts for about a third of our credits each semester. But, as hectic and time consuming as this is, that entire class is completed for the semester before normal finals even start. This totally opened my finals schedule and allowed me to focus on just two classes.
Below is my finals calendar for this past fall that includes the three weeks of school between coming back to campus in November after Thanksgiving break and leaving for Christmas break.
