How is carmax as an employer

But very soon after joining CarMax, my worries were relieved. I found an organization that not only has these components, but exemplifies them. I love helping people and I love helping associates develop. As a subject matter expert, the pure focus is on development. Success is seeing who I have developed and watching them move forward. Car loans are a multi-year, contractual commitment.

We are an honest and transparent company, and that has become our brand. Our benefits. Benefits shown are subject to plan eligibility. A workday would typically start with checking on CCM to see if there is any customers to follow up with before hitting the UPs list. Some Sales Consultants would frequent the UPs list and some would try and stay away from it. Job has too many rules and requirements of Consultants that it becomes stressful really, really fast. You may see a Consultant one day, and they're gone the next.

Management- Most of them were inexperienced as Managers and seemed to be either overwhelmed or on edge all of the time. Blames Consultants when sales numbers aren't being met, but takes credit when they are. Talks about Consultants behind their backs which creates a weird tension between management and consultants.

If your numbers are a bit low, even if the traffic is down for that time you are blamed for it and threatened to be put on a ridiculous program that is just their way of scaring you and preparing you to possibly be let go at some point. They claim people don't get fired often, but at least 5 Consultants were fired in the few months I was there.

The training program is ludicrous and takes 30 days before you go "live" watching other consultants sell things like an extended service plan which they track your sales vigorously on. They claim that they don't want you to be a pushy car salesman, but that is a ruse. They absolutely do, and when they think you may have a potential sale, they will make you pull out all of the stops on the customer which is in fact, pushy.

Pros Free food, some good fellow Consultants. Cons Too many to list, read the review. CarMax is a great company to work for. The values and culture are the foundation of what CarMax has become : The largest auto retailer in the nation.

Employees used to be their main asset. A lot has changed lately. There are a LOT of meetings that you don't get paid for. Attending a meeting on your day of is not mandatory, but is "appreciated". In other words, you are expected to show up.

Every morning and Sunday, there is a training that IS mandatory. You do not get paid for this time. Most of this training is endless repetition, up to the point where every one will feel like a little kid. Overkill is an understatement. If you don't like role plays, CarMax is not for you. Advancement to management is promised over and over again to all that are interested is sheer impossible. It is easier to enter management from outside the company than from within. Before you are eligible to a promotion, management will give you unrealistic goals to achieve and re-adjust those goals even if you have reached them.

Customers will call you on your time off and you better answer these calls if you want to keep the sale. You can make a reasonable living working 5 days a week, but usually only during summer time. Work weeks of 55 hours are no exception. Not every CarMax store is the same. A lot depends on daily management. They pretend to be people managers, but in the end it is just about meetin Pros co workers. Cons senior management. Sales Consultant United States Jul 8, Not a cutthroat environment like you would find at most dealerships.

I was with the company for over 20 years and watched dramatic changes take place over the years. When I first started there were fewer than 10 stores in the company and it was a very close knit organization.

Corporate management was able to visit the stores on a regular basis and knew most of the associates by name and were aware of what was happening in the stores. The changes that they would put in place due to these store visits were beneficial to the customers, the business and the employees. As a result, managers are graded on how well they pencil whip their reports and reviews and not on how well they manage the employees and the floor so most of the time when you need a manager to help you close a sale or gather documents for financing they are too busy on their computers to be able to help.

Also, apparently the company has decided that they have grown the business enough and are now looking for ways to squeeze every penny out of it that they can. As an example they recently built huge call centers. Pros Nice camaraderie amongst the sale consultants.

I have enjoyed all my time at Carmax, but I feel that it is time to move on to other challenges. For all this time Carmax has provided me a fun and productive workplace; I am certainly grateful for the opportunity to work here and for the skills I have learned. It is important to me that there is a social component to the work I do; I enjoy relating to and interacting with people.

Carmax has provided such a friendly and supportive environment. While I feel that I have received a professional education here, the main thing that is missing — to me — is stability and certainty. I have a young family to support and encourage; it would be nice to work in a field where, at the end of each day, I can feel that I was successful in a product-oriented sort of way and that the office I work in is a better for the work I have done.

Next, I am either on the phone with or emailing my customers, scheduling appointments with them and encouraging a sale. After these tasks, I greet new walk-in clients and provide them with world-class customer service. Carmax has been a great company to work for: throughout the day I practice teamwork and the ethic that is part of the culture here at Carmax; I plan my business day in the morning and during the day, I communicate with various departments and managers at all levels.

The management here at Carmax has mentored me since my first day, and there is always a great team of experienced leaders happy to o Pros i enjoy working in a team. The culture is great and I feel like they have decent PTO. The managers play major favorites, they don't even try to hide it.

They do nothing because they don't know anything about the actual work. They say they understand when you get behind, which is always because they just pile and pile and pile more and more work on you, but they don't understand.

They just want to hit that bottom goal to keep them from being looked at as a department, which someone really needs to.

But again, when favorites get into power by upper management they always look the other way. They give little training to get you ready for the job before throwing you into it.. They also do nothing to bridge the gap from the Home Office to the stores.

Central Business Operations is a place where your drive, ambition, and your hopes go to die. Work anywhere else in CarMax, as like I said CarMax is a good company for the most part anyways except this department.

Pros Pto, benefits. Yes There are 3 helpful reviews 3 No. Most managers in the business office seem to be bad. Unhelpful, demanding, and will give you the boot first chance they get if you don't fit their demanding standards of perfection. Pay is decent, but stay part time. Manager can make or break the feel of the place. You're better off somewhere else for the compensation.

Pros decent pay. Cons bad management, high standards for the job, low tolerance for anything other than perfect if they don't like you. Yes There are 4 helpful reviews 4 No. Carmax has a great business model and you can make good money there if you're good in sales. The managers however will not have your best interest in mind and if they don't like you you'll be treated unfairly.

Your co-workers may or may not be helpful or honest it's commission sales after all so be careful of getting customers taken from you. Pros Benefits, pay great sales incentives. Cons Unfair treatment, disrespectful managers. Too many Managers not on the same page. Managers are coming from Target and recruiting their own. Do not promote within hire from outside which makes their long term employees feel unwanted and un motivated.

No life! Mandatory overtime because always have call outs and short handed to begin with. No time to train new hires which means more work for the loyal long term employees. Management un approachable and unhelpful. Always looking to find your faults. Too worried about themselves and not their dept cuz the pressure is so high all the time. Worst company to work for , stay away. Back stabbing coworkers beware!

Rated on every transaction and accountable with observations regardless of your defense. Cons No 10 min breaks given. Great place to work, co workers are amazing as well as management. Judgement free zone and they hold you to a high standard. Which as an employee makes me feel like I matter in the company. Claimed Profile. Want to know more about working here?
